Dr Collin Quek, CIO Raffles Medical Group, Business Talk

September 12th, 2007 | by David C |

Just reached home from a very entertaining 1 1/2 hours talk by Dr Collin Quek, CIO of Raffles Medical Group. The following are my insights from the talk.

I felt Dr. Collin Quek to be a very jovial and friendly person. He constantly engages the audience with light humour jokes. His jokes are not overdone at all, in fact, I felt that it really lightened the mood and helps to keep the non-interested audience awake. Its really quite amazing, to know someone in a high executive position in Singapore, who actually knows and uses RSS for his own personal news.

Maybe I’m just not exposed to such people in such positions, but during my time at HBO, my managers are IT-illiterate, who couldn’t use Firefox to save their lives.

Dr. Quek, is really in a great position. As someone with a medical background as a physician, and now in an executive management position, he will be able to make changes in his company’s IT backbone, that might actually innovate the IT-integrated healthcare system.

Personally, I feel that the integration of Information Systems in the healthcare industry is paramount to the future of healthcare. I feel it will have an impact in potentially saving lives and preventing diseases, at the same level as how a cure for cancer might impact the world. I hope that in his position, he will be able to spearhead and help drop the boundaries between the different health organizations and get everyone to work together.
