Its all about the expectations

Just another WordPress weblog

Exploring Relationship with a Single Weirdo - Here’s another article on Lifehack by Craig Harper. Considering that I’m a 22+ and still single, I think I’ll make the perfect ‘weirdo’. But hey, I don’t mind the label.
Why doing nothing may sometimes be the best action of all - Adrian Savage writes on lifehack.org, about how sometimes, the best decisions are made by just doing nothing but watch.
Colin Charles in his blog, posted a very interesting tidbit. He notices that the current ruling political party in Malaysia as well as an official website created to bolster communication between the Malaysian electorate and current PM Badawi, are running on proprietary software.
I thought it was quite interesting to find out that PM Badawi and his ruling party are both running on Windows Server 2003 and IIS 6.0, while opposition like the DAP, PKR and PAS are running on Open-source software like Linux and Apache. DAP seems to be the most tech savvy of them all by adopting lighttpd, a very lightweight web server.
So I did a little quick research of our own local political parties, and it turns out, PAP, SDP, NSP and WP is actually running on OpenBSD/Linux and Apache, while SPP is running on Windows.
What surprises me the most is that while PAP as a party, is using open-source technologies to power their webpresence while PAP as a government is not doing the same for governmental websites.
The Government of Singapore website and MHA are running on Windows Server 2003. I haven’t had time to look through the whole list of ministries, but so far I’ve only found MINDEF running on Linux/Apache.
Why haven’t the government migrated all its servers to use open-source technology? Why use taxpayers’ money to pay Microsoft when there are readily available alternatives that does the same job for little or free? I think its time. The government should start to look into cutting costs and using the money saved to help alleviate the suffering due to higher inflation for the poor.
Wil Shipley talks about Hype and how “Monster Market” your software, create hype, and possibly get laid in the process. Amazing speaker. Wil Shipley is a developer at Delicious Monster, famously known for creating Delicious Library, a software to keep track of all your movies, music, games and books.
Attended the LKY Global Business Plan Writing Workshop yesterday after class yesterday. The whole workshop took 2 1/2 hours and wasn’t really what I was expecting.
Looking at the name of the event, one might have thought that it was going to be a long technical-oriented workshop on how to write a good business proposal, but as it turns out, the workshop was more like a forum. Guests like Professor Reddi from our SMU School of Business, Professor Kirpal Singh, Director of Creative Thinking in SMU, Mr Dennis Foo of St.James Powerstation and Europa fame and a Venture Captalist from Upstream Ventures.
It was a good mix hearing these distinguished guests talk about what they think about business and how the Singapore business landscape will look like 5,10 and 15 years from now.
Professor Reddi, gave great ideas on how should one approach the writing of a business plan, and advised us to take a 7-pronged approach to writing. Explaining that would take probably more than a blog entry, so I’ll spare you guys the agony.
All in all, it was a pretty entertaining and inspiring event. At the networking reception, I was talking to one of the organizing committee member and he said he had also receive alot of feedback from the other participants that they were expecting a more technical-based workshop and that he will put up some technical documents on the website within the week.
I think I need to start writing a formal business plan both for FRRO and for a new business idea me and a couple of friends have in mind.
Why is there a scratch diagonally across my nose when I woke up this morning? My god. How am I going to go visiting like this.

After a hiatus of about 5-8 years, I’m finally back riding again! Went to get myself a brand new Scott Sub 30 at Kian Hong Cycle at Eunos eariler today and cycled back 7.8km home. Gosh, I really need to get back into shape, the 7.8km ride nearly killed me.
I was way too excited going downslope again after a long time, that I didn’t bother about my safety and flew off my bike during one of the rides down. Day one on my new bike, and already in an accident. Haha. I miss those days where I just did stupid things. Makes me feel alive again.
